Fort Stewart Gate Commute Guide: Which Gate to Live Near

Fort Stewart has multiple access gates, and which one you live near can swing your daily commute by 10 or more minutes. Gate 1, the main gate on Oglethorpe Highway, is the busiest and backs up at peak hours. Gate 7 is typically faster from western Hinesville, Walthourville, and Flemington. Gate 8 on Highway 144 is best from Midway and the I-95 corridor. Most buyers do not learn this until after they have closed.

Two homes can look identical on a map, "10 minutes from Fort Stewart," and deliver completely different daily lives. The difference is the gate. Here is what to know before you write an offer.

The Gates and Their Realities

Gate 1 (Main Gate, Hinesville)

Located off Oglethorpe Highway / GA-196. This is the busiest gate and the one most visitors use. It backs up during peak hours, roughly 0600 to 0730 in the morning and 1630 to 1800 in the afternoon. Best access from central and eastern Hinesville. If you live near Gate 1, plan your departure around the peak windows.

Gate 7 (15th Street)

On the western edge of Hinesville. Generally less congested at peak hours than Gate 1. Best access from western Hinesville, Walthourville, and Flemington. Gate access hours have changed historically, so confirm current hours before you rely on it.

Gate 8 (Highway 144)

On the east side, near the 144 corridor. Lower congestion most days. Best access from Midway and buyers commuting from the I-95 corridor.

Always verify current gate hours and access rules with Fort Stewart Garrison. Gates close for maintenance, training exercises, and security events. A gate that is open today may have reduced hours next month.

How to Test a Home Before You Offer

  1. Drive to your actual unit building, not just the gate. Fort Stewart is large. Your unit could be a 5-minute drive inside the gate, or 15.
  2. Test at the real time of day. A 0530 drive is not a 0700 drive. Traffic at the gate peaks with the duty day.
  3. Test your backup gate too. Gates close. Know your plan B before you need it.
  4. Ask your sponsor or future neighbors. Local knowledge beats a maps estimate every time.

A Real Example

Two homes, both listed at $230,000, both shown as "10 minutes from Fort Stewart" by Google Maps. House A sits near Gate 1 in Hinesville, but Gate 1 backs up at 0700, so the real morning commute is about 18 minutes. House B sits near Gate 7 in Walthourville, with a real commute of about 11 minutes. Same price, same bedrooms, same school district. Different daily life.

Seven minutes each way, twice a day, 250 work days a year, is 58 hours. That is a week and a half of your life every year, decided by which gate your house feeds. It costs nothing to check before you offer.
